OUR SCHNAUZER´S GROOMING
The grooming of breed with hard coat is made through stripping the hair and not cutting it because if we cut it, then it becomes soft and cutton.
This technique is called "trimming" and can be done in different ways:

1. Using a trimming knife and with the help of our thumb and the knife, keeping the hair between our fingers, it is easily trimmed.
This method has some inconviniences, because a bad trimming cuts some hair. Therefore it doesn´t grow the way you wish.

2- With fingers
Which is the ideal way of doing it, since trimming with fingers, the hair doesn´t break and goes entire, so it doesn´t get soft.
We have to keep in mind that the hard coat is for covering and the undercoat is a soft, inside coat. If the undercoat is short and thik it is not necessary to make it but if it is too thik and grows long, we should trim it with the fingers,to avoid the obstruction of the growing of hard coat.

TRIMMING PARTS
To avoid doing inecessary harm to the animal, with the clipper machine, we will cut the hair of the ears, cheeks, throat, anus and belly.
When the hairs is trimmed the dog stays naked.
Therefore, he/she can´t participate in a show.
Usually after a trimming we should wait for two or two months and a half till he/she can be showed. For this reason there are many ways of doing it.

3. Stripping (whole naked)
This is done in phases (see picture 2) where we pluck out the dog (to zero) by parts. We do it first of all in the parts where he has got more coat and later, in the parts where he should have it short.
See graphic where trimming weeks are shown. We trim these part to zero in the respactive weeks, then we wait for three to five weeks so that, we can show him/her.

4. The rolling coat
It is a technique of a weekly or fortnight plucking and we go on making several hair layers.
In order to really understand this, since when you pluck it takes you two months to have the hair grown, if you periodically pluck out the extra hair of the body, there is always a hair layer underneath that covers the body and doesn´t let it naked.
This technique is necessary when you want to have your dog in a excellent conditions to show him constanly, for example, in spain we don´t know the day of the shows and thejudges that we are going to have quite in advance. Thats why, if we know that the judge is interesting, then we don´t have enough time to get our dog ready for the show with the right length.
Meanwhile, if we keep him/her with the "rolling-coat" it would be possible to show him/her in all shows with the complete-stripping we have only two months with hair to show and we have lost the previous tow month because we have the dog naked. Therefore, only if we are lucky enough we can show him/her for six months a year.
Now let´s have a look at the care of the hair on legs, chest, beard and eyebrows.
We will bathe exclusively these parts of soft hair once a week and we dry with a hairdryer (combing).
To cut and give form to soft hair we will use scissors.

LEGS: We will cut these part in a tube form and we will take care in order thet they will be uniform with the body.
CHEST: We will cut the chest in a straight line, following the body line.
HEAD: We will cut the eyebrows in a V form and we will blunt (if it is necessary)

All we shall de, must be thought about previously, in order to make highlight valves of our dog and try to better it´s silhouette.
All our work should be done with enough patience and devoting short time but frecuently and not trying to do it all at once.
